CHAPPELOW MAGNET SCHOOL
Evans, Colorado
Chappelow Detention Pond –
An Outdoor Educational Experience
The concept of this particular project is to create an outdoor educational open space within an existing regional detention pond area of 9 acres. Conceptually, the City of Evans wishes to develop a Schoolyard Habitat® that can be utilized by students at several schools nearby for science research, outdoor education, and ongoing school projects (gardens, tree growth study, moisture and soil study, etc.).
Currently, the City of Evans Parks and Recreation Department is working directly with staff and students at the adjacent Chappelow Magnet School as well as the Evans Chamber of Commerce as partners for the pursuit of the project as a "Better Schools, Better Communities" effort.
Sports Genesis is providing the needed master plans by attending the public input meetings and utilizing student input to develop a series of master plans to develop an open space area with outdoor educational components. |

To help reconnect today's children to the outdoors, the National Wildlife Federation assists schools in developing outdoor classrooms called Schoolyard Habitats®, where educators and students learn how to attract and support local wildlife. These wildlife habitats become places where students not only learn about wildlife species and ecosystems, but also outdoor classrooms where they hone their academic skills and nurture their innate curiosity and creativity. |

REGIONAL SPORTS FACILITY Echo, Oregon
Echo, Oregon – In Need for a Regional Sports Field Park
The City of Echo, Oregon identified the need for a large regional park dedicated to athletic fields for T-Ball, Little League, Babe Ruth, Soccer and an outdoor basketball court. The only athletic field is at the local high school consisting of a baseball diamond and football field. The City is able to squeeze a T-Ball field into a corner of the field near this baseball diamond. In addition to these program elements the City is in need for a public playground. Other than one swing and two spring animals at an existing local park, the only playground equipment in town is at the school, which of course is not open to preschool or homeschooled children during school hours.
Echo has asked the assistance of Sports Genesis to develop a better and more detailed regional park master plan, the estimated design and construction costs and the acreage needed to develop this multi-purpose athletic complex. As such a small community, it is hard for Echo to raise the amount of funding needed for such facilities. |

Echo has participated in the America in Bloom Livability Program since 2006. In 2009 Echo was the winner of the under 4000 population category. In 2007 the city won a bronze award in the International Awards for Livable Community (LivCom), Whole City Competition in the under 20,000 population category. Echo has also been Oregon’s smallest Tree City USA since 1989—one of only 3 in eastern Oregon. As indicated from these awards, livability is very important to their community. |
